Concept

My work originates from ideas with strong connections to architectural space, and is often the result of a continuing fascination with the notion of fictional or unbuilt environments. Exploring how narrative exists both on and off the written page; stories - personal, literary, social or historical - play a pivotal role in my work. An initial concept is developed through extensive visual and written research; the design process combines sketch work and technical drawing which are then further explored plastically through the creation of experimental maquettes.

Construct

At first appearing life size in construction, three dimensional works involve the designing and building of theatrical model sets, intricately fabricated from wood, paper, clay or plaster. Each structure is meticulously hand built and highly detailed, representing a labour intensive process. The work varies from small to large scale models, and may employ a range of different casting and sculpting techniques. Built in the form of precisely scaled simulations, constructs may be viewed as either stand alone models or when photographed, as convincing and full scale.

Photograph

Working primarily within the genre of staged photography, I use traditional photography and the latent properties of film to create bespoke in-camera effects. By employing various techniques which allow me to 'operate' or manoeuvre visual elements from behind the camera, I gradually animate a static model and often develop an idea as a sequence of images. Working non-digitally and without post image manipulation; models are lent the appearance of authenticity and rendered life-size and real looking through the artifice of the camera. Lighting is central to the work, employing a range of different approaches from conventional studio lighting to tailor made, and modified light sources. Seen from the singular viewpoint of the camera, model constructions take the form of carefully crafted visual illusions.

Deliver

I have completed a number of commissioned bodies of work which have been exhibited and published both internationally and in the UK. My work can also be applied to the fields of theatre, film, animation and advertising.
